A favour

Cheaper Than Therapy

I am not one for doing sad, depressing posts, because....well...people dont want to read to feel sad and depressed.

But today is different.

My post today is sad and depressing.

I am Canadian as you all know. An 8 year old girl went missing on April 8 from a small town here in Ontario. I dont live near the town or know anyone who does, but it still interested me.

I have children.

I have a heart.

News broke yesterday of 2 arrests in the murder of this precious girl.

So today, instead of talking about poop, pee and curse words, I want to ask a favour.

I want you to talk to your kids about stranger dangers. This girl was taken by someone right from her school. I want you to talk to your kids about being safe. I want you to hug your kids tight. I want you to cherish every second you have with them.

Even if every second involves poop, pee and bad words.

Heartbreaking. We're struggling with the stranger issue here, my three year old is so friendly and it's hard to explain to him why you can't just strike up a conversation with every person that walks by.

This is something that I fear. Hayden is so friendly and will go up to anyone and start talking with them and sometimes even will start to go off with them. I just don't know how to get it across to him with out scaring the beejeezes out of him.

How incredibly scary and sad. Were they able to recover her? I can't imagine!

I didn't know you were a fellow Canadian. Or if I did, I didn't pay it any attention!

Praying along with you for this little girl. And we will be having the "stranger" talk again at dinner tonight!

uh. I read about this and maybe it IS because we have children, but these stories get to me more and more as I get older. So horrific. Praying.

Over 30 years ago, my son knew every word of "Never Talk To Strangers" by heart! Long before he could read, I pounded it into his little brain - and enforced it. When at the park, mall, wherever - if a stranger approached and started to talk with him, I would jump in and tell them our rule! NEVER TALK TO STRANGERS!

It never, ever bothered me to seem rude - it was worth my peace of mind to tell a stranger that they were acting improperly.

If I want to say something about a child I don't know when I'm out and about - I speak to the adult. In the times we are living in, you just can't take chances.

Oh what a nightmare! I pray that nothing like that every happens to anyone I know (or really to anyone, whether I know them or not). What a senseless tragedy. Thank you for the reminder! I can't wait for Mister Man to go to Safety Town this summer -- and yes, we have a whole summer school course by me all about how to be safe at various activities from being around dogs to biking to stranger danger.

We talk to our kids about stranger dangers on a somewhat regular basis but they still really don't get it. They are so safe and loved that they just don't really comprehend the danger. But I will pass this story onto them and keep pounding it into their heads. What a nightmare. The poor parents of that little girl.

How horrific :( It's so sad that we cannot even trust our schools anymore! I continuously talk to my children (8 & 13) about strangers, other dangers and how to contact someone if needed. I think I drive them batty since I do this every time we or they go anywhere with or without us but this world just isn't safe enough!
Some people think I'm an over protective mother but I would rather be called that than have something like this happen to my children! My thoughts & prayers go out to the family.
