My Shadow

I have a shadow.

His name is Rowdy.

When Daddy isnt around he follows me everywhere I go.

It drives me nuts.

I love my kids to pieces but all I ask is to be able to go to the bathroom without an audience.

And to shower in private.

And get dressed without a million giggles.

Let me tell you abit about Rowdy and maybe you can let me in on some parenting facts that I did not read in the "How to be a Good Parent" Manual.

Rowdy enjoys keeping busy from the second he opens his eyes until he falls asleep at night.

He does not stop.

Even for TV.

Rowdy has a hard time playing independently.

He always wants Mommy to play a game, play a sport, play in the sandbox....just play with him.

But Mommy has things to do.

And Mommy would like to do those things while Rowdy plays nearby.

Without Rowdy following behind her asking "Are you done yet?"

"How much longer till' you can play with me?"

Have I mentioned how much this drives me crazy?

Because it does.

It really does.

So fill me in. What have I missed in teaching my children to become independent and have vivid imaginations? Why cant he play cars? Do a craft? Build a fort? Play with the gazillion pieces of Lego he has? Colour?

Help.

Love your picture! Don't fret - it won't be long and he'll be shadowing some other girl instead of his mom!

Love it! I think it's the age he's at... hopefully he'll outgrow it. At 3 1/2 Evan is doing much better. He's more independent with interesting activities (or other children) and doesn't need me to engage him in the activity all the time. Still happens sometimes. =)

I had to laugh at your last little Help. You're gonna miss that shadow one day!

Hmmmm...maybe you could tell him if he plays by himself for 10 minutes then you'll play a game. And then slowly stretch the time out until he's able to play by himself for longer periods. You've probably already tried that. Sorry.

But I adore the picture!

He sounds like a great kid, but the neediness could make any parent a little nuts. I guess he doesn't play well with his brother.

Maybe he would like a musical instrument? Or a good book?

That is a great WW and something all of us moms can relate to. :)

Hayden likes to do this with me but I tell him he has to play by himself for 10 minutes (I set a timer) and then I will do something with him. We go back and forth like this and I gradually extent the time.

Cute pic. One day you will be sad he doesn't follow you around :)

I second what girlytwins said. I know it's hard - I remember going through it with mine. But now? I constantly get "don't touch me" when all I want to do is pet him.
