.........

The other day I was..umm..kinda yelling at my kids because they were wrestling.
I smiled, because I imagined my father sitting beside me.
He would have said sarcastically, "Why don't you have a few more kids?" and then he would have giggled at his humour.

Last week I was in the grocery store and saw a freshly baked Boston Cream Pie.
I smiled because I remembered how much my daddy loved them.

Today I was remembering how much my dad used to hate cats.
Then, all of a sudden he loved them.
So much, that he and mom had a few at home that I think he loved more than me.
I smiled.

On Nicholas' birthday last week, I remembered my daddy standing outside the birthing room waiting for his first grandchild to be born 12 years ago.
He was so excited.
And nervous.
And fell madly in love with his grandson instantly.
I remembered dad "inspecting" Nicholas and how he was completely in awe of his perfection.
I smiled.

A few weeks ago I drove my father's pick up truck.
It still smells like him.
I tried to smile, but I couldn't.

Because he isn't here today, on what would have been his birthday.

Happy Birthday up in Heaven, Daddy.

Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

Word up, peeps.
Guess what month it is?
It is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, which means it is time for me to get all "lecture-y" and tell you all about it and how much it sucks ass and how much it has affected my family and how much I want everyone in the world to stop smoking and how much I want harmful chemicals to be replaced with roses and lemons mixed in with a little bit of vinegar.
Wishful thinking?
Maybe.
But I will keep wishing until I can no longer wish.

My daddy had lung cancer and I cannot stress enough how horrible it was to watch him go through it.
My daddy passed away April 17, 2012.
It will be forever known as the worst day of the 365 days in the year for me.

This is a picture of my Daddy as a young boy.
scan0010
I know. He was the cutest.
This is a picture of him as a {young-ish} man.
scan0124
Still the cutest.
I know.

He should still be here.
Lets talk about this monster that took him from us way too soon.

Most of the world believes that smokers are the only people who will get lung cancer.
Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo wrong, my friends.
The truth is, that the rate of new lung cancer diagnoses in people who have never smoked is rapidly increasing.
No one gets a "free pass" with lung cancer.

Exposure to harmful chemicals.
Hereditary factors.
Second hand smoke.
Air pollution.

Any of the above affects most of us, which means that we are all at risk.
And if you read the statistics, it is effing scary.
Maybe next week we can discuss them.

But in the meantime, be very aware of the air you are inhaling.

Feel free to share any info about lung cancer in the comments section
or
on my Facebook page.
The more info/stories we can get out there, the better.

P.S  I miss my Daddy.

Discussing Esophageal Cancer

It was the summer of 2010 that I knew something just wasn't right.
My dad had recently lost his brother to cancer and just wasn't himself.
I chalked it up to him grieving.
He was the last one left in his immediate family.

His younger brother had passed away the year I was born in a horrific accident.
His mom passed away in her sleep at the young age of 60 or 61 when I was just a kid.  {I must check on that}
His father passed away 20 years ago due to complications from emphysema.
And now his older brother was gone.

He was the only one left.
He was quiet.  He didn't have much energy.
I can remember going for a boat ride that summer and sitting beside him as we pulled the kids behind on the tube.
He said that it was very upsetting that his brother was missing "all of this".
He was gone too young and now he was going to miss out on so much life.
So many moments.

I agreed and thanked God for keeping my daddy here with us.

That weekend my daddy took a 3+ hour nap in mid afternoon.
And was still exhausted.

I remember the exact moment, sitting in the lawn chair at the lake, knowing something wasn't right.

That was the beginning of what I now consider theworsttwoyearsofmylife.
Dad was diagnosed with bronchitis and given puffers to clear it up.
It didnt go away.
More puffers.
No change.

Months later they found something on his lung.

But he also had issues swallowing.
He could swallow but the food just wouldnt go down all of the time.
He had pain in his chest area.

When the doctors tried to biopsy his lung, they realized that his esophagus was very narrow.

Yeah.
Shitty.

Lung cancer.
Esophageal cancer.

My daddy was sick.
And I was sick knowing that my daddy was sick.

I became an expert about this horrific disease.
My husband's father had passed away of the same cancer, believe it or not, so, sadly, our previous experience with the monster was not good.
I hate esophageal cancer.
Hate.
Hate.
Hate.
I found blogs.
I read the research.
The prognosis and treatments.

April is Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month and I beg you to get yourself familiar with it.

It is the fastest growing cancer in this part of the world, yet most people know nothing about it.
Please think about what youre putting into your body.
Your esophagus is a fragile organ.
Like everything else, we have to take care of it.

Symptoms of esophageal cancer Heartburn
Difficulty swallowing
Inability to swallow solid foods (eventually liquids also)
Pain with swallowing
Food sticking in esophagus
Weight loss
Regurgitation of undigested food
Vomiting blood or passing old blood with bowel movements

The saddest part is that most people dont have any symptoms until the advanced stages.  By the time my dad and my husband's dad knew something was wrong, it was advanced.

I will say this, though.
My father knew something wasnt right, long before anyone else did, but he just kept it to himself and crossed his fingers that it was just "nothing".

Prevention is the key.

Preventing esophageal cancer

Dont smoke.  For eff sakes, just dont effing smoke.
Avoid or limit alcohol.  That shit is poison to your esophagus.  Mix it with tobacco and it is the perfect concoction to damage the esophageal tissues.
Damaging the esophageal tissues=BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get treatment for your heartburn if it happens often.  Stop eating stuff that causes heartburn.  Do whatever you can to prevent it.
Popping the antacids does not solve the issue!
Go to the doctor the first time you have problems swallowing.  Like, immediately.

I know all cancers are horrible, but, when your loved one cannot even drink water, it is just.........the worst thing ever.
When they rely on feeding tubes.....the worst ever.
*sniff*
{pass the tissues}

That is my speech for today.

Thank you for listening...err....ummm....reading.

I effing hate cancer.

Aside from the fact that my daughter, husband, mom and other friends and loved ones were born in April, this month totally, completely sucks rocks.

I effing hate April.....except for a few dates.

You see, my daddy had cancer.
We lost him to Heaven last April and I am struggling to smile and get through this month as we celebrate spring, birthdays etc etc.
Because I miss him so much it hurts.

April is Cancer Awareness Month and many volunteers will be out and about selling daffodils.
Daffodils are flowers.
Daffodils are pretty.
I like to say daffodils.

Please buy some.
Or buy a daffodil pin for every single coat, purse, bag, article of clothing you own.

Purchasing these helps to support the ongoing cancer research that one day will cure this horrible monster.

I effing hate cancer.
I hate that it took my daddy.
I hate that it took my husband's dad, who, believe it or not, had the same cancer as mine.

Both of our fathers had esophageal cancer.
I have noticed that many U.S states have declared April, Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month but haven't noticed much attention given to it here in Canada.
Lets change that.

Throughout this month I plan on sharing my opinions/thoughts/experiences on esophageal cancer as I now consider myself an expert.
Kinda.
Not really.
But my family experienced it and I don't want anyone else to, because it...well.....ummm.....was exceptionally shitty.

Yeah.

Now go buy some daffodils.
And then buy some periwinkle esophageal cancer merchandise and display it so we can get the word out.

A Po-etter to Lance Armstrong

One of MamaKat's prompts this week was to write an open letter to men. This is mine. To one man.
I like to call it a po-etter.
Half poem
Half letter

What were you thinking?
Did you think it was right?
To lie to the world
and tell us everything was alright.

Did you think you could go on lying
Telling them they were wrong
That you never did illegal drugs
And competing was where you belong

The medals you won
The competitors you beat
The endorsements and sponsors
And friends of the elite

It was all just a show
Because of your selfish deeds
And many were hurt
Their forgiveness you will need

Despite your horrible actions
over many, many years
I have one thing to say
so I have to change gears

The money you raised
raising millions for cancer
is the one good outcome
and the only good answer

To the question we will ask
in the many years ahead
What did Lance Armstrong accomplish?
Aside from the lies that he said

Lung Cancer Bites

Brace yourselves.
Here we go again.

Remember?
It is Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
I am going to keep talking about it until everyone knows all about it...
...how it affects those who love the people who get the horrible, horrible disease...
...how it completely, totally sucks ass.

Excuse my language.

My children, in their young, short lives have experienced loss more than most adults four times their age.  We have had the "Doctors couldn't make him better" discussion so often that they can now predict exactly what will be said.
They seem to understand death, heaven and angels, but it doesn't make the pain any less...ummm...painful.

So I had this idea.
I would get my kids to talk about it.
I wanted their own words.
I wanted to see if I could talk about it without getting all verklempt.
And, as you can see from these videos, we are all dealing with this grief crap very differently.....

....humour......

....and complete sadness with some anger added in....

And then there is me who still imagines her Daddy's voice....his smell....his raspy laugh and sometimes "speak before you think" humour.
There is me who still thinks he is away and will be back for Christmas.
I call it denial.
It's working for me so far.

Don't smoke please.
Don't allow smoking in your house.
Inform everyone you know that lung cancer is a monster who takes away the best people ever from their young grandchildren.

My apologies for the depressing stuff lately.....just trying to get the message across.
Group hug.
Smooches.

Lung Cancer Awareness Month

37 years ago today my father's youngest brother was killed in an accident. Since then my father's parents, older brother and my father himself have joined my Uncle Rick in Heaven.
An entire family.
Gone.
Where is the "dislike" button?
The "not fair" button?

What do Walt Disney, Peter Jennings, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, my Uncle {dad's brother} and my Dad have in common?

Lung cancer.
November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know that???

*Lung Cancer is the deadliest of all cancers.
*In fact it causes more deaths than colon, breast and prostate cancer combined.
*Over half of all people diagnosed with lung cancer, die within one year. My dad lived for almost 16 months.
*Smoking is responsible for the majority of lung cancer cases, BUT it is not the only factor.
*Most cases of lung cancer are not discovered until the disease is very advanced.

I am not one to lecture or judge, but when I see someone smoking, I want to yell at them.
I want to tell them about the hell my young father went through.
The endless appointments.
Procedures.
Medication.
Nurse visits.
Chemo/Radiation.
Being hooked up to oxygen 24/7.
Weight loss.
Hospital visits.

And now he is gone. At 61.

When he should be enjoying retirement with my Mama.
When he should be enjoying his grandchildren.
When he should be enjoying life.
Please don't smoke.
Please donate to lung cancer research.
Please hug your Daddy tight.

Discussing Grief. Again.

Denial
Anger
Bargaining
Depression
Acceptance

These are the five stages of grief. If I was brilliant and had some education and research in my past, I would list them as.

Hell
Hell
Hell
Hell
Hell

I have never been to Hell and, to be honest, have always pictured it as a dark, dungeon-like place with sad faces and very unhappy souls.

Like my life right now.
I miss my Daddy so much it physically hurts.
I want to vomit all of the time.
I want to wake up from this horrible dream.
I want to escape this Hell on Earth because that is what it is without my Daddy here.

He was a private person and did not want his "troubles" to be talked about which I respected.
But now that he is gone, I find writing about it therapeutic.
And I am sure he would respect that too.

Why did this happen? Why did a man who still had so much life to live, places to go and people to hug leave this Earth so young?
I am struggling with this.
People tell me to appreciate and cherish the time we had with him.
People tell me to hold the memories tight and continue to talk about him so he is never forgotten.
People tell me it takes time. That the hurt will lessen and the pain will be less sharp.

But as my family celebrated Mothers Day and my birthday yesterday with a hike up to the family maple bush, I couldn't help but wish my Dad was walking with us.
I wanted him there with us as we strolled through the forest full of trillium's.
DSC_0535
As we rode ATVs past the place where he always talked about putting his trailer/camper.
Because it was quiet.
Peaceful.
Surrounded by beauty.

I will tell you a secret.
Promise not to tell anyone?
When I woke up on the day I turned 37, I asked my Daddy to give me a sign that he was there with me.
I saw more blue jays yesterday than ever before.

He was there.

Forever Broken

My daddy has gone to Heaven.
I am forever broken.
